Science Academy Parent Letter

Families,

Soon you will be receiving an STISD Parent Selection Form asking whether your student will return to campus in October. We love and miss our students; therefore, we want to be transparent and outline the safety protocols we have in place to foster a safe and healthy environment. We feel this information will help your family make sound decisions for your student at Science Academy.

Upon arrival, ALL students will be required to have a wellness check, where their temperature will be checked before entering any of our campus buildings. If students are dropped off, they must wait in their vehicle until they are cleared to remain on campus. Once cleared, students will be escorted to their first period class.

If students will be riding the bus, they will be given a wellness check, where their bus driver will check their temperature and clear them to board the bus. Parents MUST WAIT at the bus stop until the student boards. If students do not pass the wellness check, they will not be allowed to board the bus.

During the bus ride to campus, students must wear a mask during the entire time. They will be assigned a seat, ensuring social distancing. The windows on the bus will remain open, to foster air circulation, since the air conditioning cannot be running while students are on board. When buses arrive on campus, students will be escorted to their first period class.

Students will continue to follow the district-wide bell schedule for virtual instruction and participate in virtual classroom settings every period. Teachers will continue to provide online instruction to all their students. During class, students will be required to continue wearing a mask and practice social distancing. They will also be required to use a desk shield.

Restroom breaks will be organized in a manner that prevents students from crowding in any areas. Students will not be allowed to use the restroom in between classes, during passing periods, unless there is an emergency. In these cases, students will be escorted by a staff member.

Eating meals while on campus will look different from what we are accustomed. During breakfast, students will be brought their meals from the cafeteria and eat in their first period class. Students will be sitting 6 feet apart, using their desk shields and must remain seated. At lunch time, students may be escorted to the cafeteria, where social distancing will be required. Students will be sitting 6 feet apart, using their desk shields and must remain seated. Students will not be allowed to socialize in the cafeteria, since students will need to remove masks while eating. Additionally, parents will not be allowed to bring meals to students.

When transitioning from class to class, students will be required to walk in lines, following designated 2-way signage on campus, remaining six feet apart and escorted by a staff member. Keep in mind, students will not be assigned a locker to store their materials. We recommend students use one backpack for A Day and another for B Day in order to avoid students carrying ALL of their materials for each of their classes every day.

At the end of the day, students who will be picked up by parents will wait until called upon to leave the building. While students who ride the bus will be escorted to bus lanes, following all safety and social distancing protocols.

Although these procedures may seem extreme, the safety of our students and staff is priority thus, we must do all that we can to minimize potential spread of the virus.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Irma Castillo
